LO1 - Analysing short films

Envoy - short sci-fi film

The narrative of this short film centers on two brothers and their dogs as they investigate something in a cornfield in their local town.Once reaching the field they soon learn that an alien is living in the field. After drawing it out of the field the younger brother comes face to face with the alien who turns out to be rather friendly too the brothers. But the encounter so turns violent when the army arrives and attacks the alien without warning. During the confrontation the alien escapes and the two brothers are taken prisoner by the US military for questioning. The boys are questioned and then the alien rescues them from prison.

The younger brother is represented as being outgoing and curious and the director shows this by having the younger brother convince his older brother of the aliens existence. He is also a subordinate to his brother this is shown through the use of low angle shots during their conversation. The older brother is much the opposite of his brother and is very cautious and hesitant to hear his brothers claims but ultimately he sees that his brother was telling the truth. He is shown as the dominant of the two brothers this is shown through his age and the use of high angle camera shots. The military commander is shown as being a very authoritative and direct character, he interrogates the younger brother and definitely asserts himself as being the dominate character the director shows this by having the commander use a much higher tone of voice and by using high angle shots too show that he is asserting his dominance.

There are many uses of different types of camera work throughout this short film. One example is the use of a tracking shot, I believe that this is used so that the audience can keep track off a certain character and the action that is taking place in the audience. Another use of a camera shot is the use of a over the shoulder shot when the boy first meets the alien, this could connote dominance and curiosity i believe this was used so that the audience can get a sense of scale for the alien and see things from his point of view. Another use of a camera shot is a close up, this connote fear and shock i believe this was used so that the audience can see clearly the emotions that the soldier is showing in the scene.

Throughout the short there are many editing techniques shown for example the use of shot reverse shot during a conversation, i believe the director used this technique so that the audience can see the conversation from multiple perspectives and connect with all the characters within the scene. Another use of a editing is action match, this is used during an action scene, this is effective as it shows the audience the same piece of action but from multiple different angles and locations.

There are many uses of visual effects throughout the short film one example being the alien himself is completely made up off visual effects, it is really well done and appears real within the diegesis through the use of visual effects they are able to bring a character to life that helps the story and the audience is able to feel for this character as he is attacked without warning. Another visual effect is the inclusion of a explosion this could connote fear and violence and helps to intensify the action for the audience.

Dragons - animated short film

The narrative of this short follows the main character "Hanzo" as he ventures to his families old home to honor his brother "genji" who he murdered after he was ordered to by his farther. Little does he know his brother survived the duel and has followed him on his journey to their former home. The two have a duel which ends with genji revealing himself to his brother.

Genji is seen as being a middle aged man. Compared to his brother genji is more caring as he spares his brothers life and inspires confidence within him, this can be seen in the quote "perhaps i am a fool to think that there is still hope for you, but I do". We learn genji didn't agree with his families evil legacy and did not go along with tradition which is why his brother attacked him, however he recovered from his injuries and fights fro good around the globe. This makes genji a compelling character for the audience. Hanzo on the other hand is shown as being more violent as he does not hesitate to attack anyone in his way, however he does attempt to do the right thing by going to honor his brother when he thought he was dead.

Throughout the short there are many different types of camera shot and angle types. One example being the use of a high angle shot, this is used too establish genji as being the dominant off the two characters the effect on the audience could be that they are excited too see how the characters interact from know on. Another example is the use of a close up this is used too focus in on Hanzo and the emotions he's expressing, the effect on the audience could be that they are intrigued by his dialogue as it was a key focus of the scene. Another example is the use of a over the shoulder shot, this is used so that the viewer can see the scene from the perspective off genji during a key dialogue exchange where he and his brother share a intimate moment.

There are many editing techniques used within the short one such being the use off slow-mo this is used to exaggerate the action, the effect on the audience could be that they are excited too see the incoming action sequence. Another example is the use of shot reverse shot this is used during a dialogue exchange, this is used too give the audience multiple perspectives on the exchange. Another example is the use of action match this is used during an action scene in order to give the audience views off the same piece off action from multiple angles and locations, this helps keep the audience interested in the scene.

There are many examples off visual effects throughout the trailer. Firstly the entire short is animated, I believe that this was done as it allows the creators too create interesting characters and locations that don't exist in real life. This also allows them too create action set pieces that they wouldn't have been able to achieve without the use of animation so it makes the fight scenes much more engaging for a viewer as they have depth to them. Another positive off using animation is that the art style they've used is very unique and makes it very distinguishable for a returning viewer.

Room 8 - Drama short film

The narrative of this short follows a prison in mate being put into a new prison cell. He enters and finds he is sharing with another prisoner. He then discovers a box within the room and proceeds to investigate it. He then finds out that the box seems to have magical properties and shows much larger versions of themselves within the same room. Events spiral from there and the first prisoner is put into a match box as his smaller self by his inmate. He then says to the guard "send in the next prisoner".

The first prisoner is represented as a very curious character, this is shown throughout as he investigates his new surroundings and the objects and people and objects that acompany him. While in contrast to this the second prisoner is shown  as being  much more humble and keeps to himself, this is shown when the first prisoner trys to open the box for the first time he is very hesitant for him to do so and warns him against it.

Throughout the short there are many different types of camera shot and angle types. One example is the use of a high angle shot this is used to show the audience that a certain character is surbordinate to another. Another is the use of a close up shot this is used to focus on a key piece of dialogue and the emotions that the character is showing at that moment in time. Another shot type used is the use of a over the shoulder shot this is used so that the audience can feel what it would be like too be apart off the scene and see it from a characters perspective.

There are many editing techniques used within the short one being the use off shot reverse shot this is used to during a conversation this is used to give the audeince multiple perspectives on the same dialogue exchange and then have the audience connect with more than one character. Another example is the use of a jump cut, this is used to increase the pacing off the scene and condense the shot for the audience.

There are not many examples of visual effects within the short, however there is one stand out use of visual effects, this is the use of a giant hand that enters the prison cell. This helps too add a deeper layer in the short as if it wasnt for the inclusion of this visual effect the short may have been another bland short so this helps add a deeper layer of fidelity onto the short. The effect also adds scale too the short as it shows the characters interacting with this huge object add actually makes the main character feel surbordinate as he is struck with fear and recalls when he sees it for the time. It is also a key plot point as it helps progress the plot by driving the main character to try and use it too allow him too escape his prison cell.
